"That's what I would call Some Accident"

One of Timo's favorite activities is to dump out all his cars from the toy basket and then arrange them one by one into a huge pile, with careful balancing. Usually this takes place in the center of the living room. One afternoon we found that he had piled them onto the footstool, with the biggest dump truck upside down on the top with a tractor on top of that. He was quite proud.
 

Now to destroy the pile and start all over!!
 

I suspect that he has taken this idea from his favorite book, Richard Scarry's Cars and Trucks and Things That Go. I'm sure we all know every line from this book by heart, and Timo has studied every page very carefully. Fortunately his trucks and cars are not filled with ketchup and mustard and bananas and eggs.

"Oh, NO! I never thought I would see an accident as bad as this one. This is what I would call SOME ACCIDENT! ...Luckily, no one was badly hurt."

Our little elephant because... 

• he makes a lot of noises when he is falling asleep and while sleeping! Grunting, wheezing, snorting and some other kind of "he-EEE"-ing that sounds like an elephant.
• he is getting big so fast! Gaining weight, getting tall and climbing the charts. It is amazing to visibly see the growth happening from day to day. How much longer will he fit in his big brother's lap?!

He likes to snuggle and snooze in the ring sling while around the house. Usually facing into Mommy, but here's one where he was facing out while I was making dinner. (We'd just been on a walk, too, which is why I'm still wearing my hat.) I mean, seriously, look at those cheeks!

Thanksgiving week activities

We had a wonderful and quiet long weekend of Thanksgiving family time. Jim was able to take a half day on Wednesday, and then was off on Thursday and Friday. We all enjoyed having him around during the daytime, especially me - for those tricky early morning hours with a nursing baby and a two-year old both needing attention, and momma needing extra sleep - and Timo, who got to play lots of basketball and "tool box" to his heart's delight. His first words every morning getting out of bed are always, "Daddy?"

On Wednesday our cousins Jeremy and Melanie (sans kids) came over for a few hours; they were staying all week for the holiday with Jeremy's family in Denver and drove down to see us. What an encouragement to be able to connect right away and just talk openly about life. For a quick, easy lunch we had some vegan spinach-artichoke dip (soy milk and nutritional yeast instead of cream and cheese), roasted butternut and chickpeas, and various bread and veggies for dipping.

Thanksgiving Day was very quiet in our house. We had a special breakfast of pancakes and cinnamon fried apples; went for a walk in the neighborhood - it was nice and sunny - and watched football. We were feeling very tired and so decided not to join in with two families who had invited us for a Thanksgiving meal.

 Look who is a month old!! It will be interesting to see if these two boys end up looking alike. At this age, Mattias looks a lot like Gemma and Timo did, except that his eyes are a lighter blue-brown, not a dark chocolate brown. The other BIG difference is that Mats is already taller and heavier, and gaining weight so fast. At his 1 month check-up (when he was actually 5 weeks old) he was 23.25 inches - 95% - and 11 pounds 4 ounces - 75%!! On more than one occasion, I have gone to get him in the morning or after a nap, picked him up, and exclaimed, "Good gracious! What happened! You're getting so big!"

On Friday Jim bought a small live tree and got out the Christmas decorations. He also upgraded our Christmas music listening from his "soft opening" of classical and choral music to his "grand opening" Christmas music: Bing Crosby, Sarah Maclachlan, Over the Rhine, Michael W Smith, etc. Timo was very excited to help put the ornaments on the tree. Every day since he has 'helped' un-decorate and re-decorate for us.

Saturday was quite warm and sunny. After morning reading time (and scattering of toys all over the living room) we went to Palmer Park for an easy hike. It always helps energize me and give me contentment with our days (which right now can be tiring and demanding) to be outside, walking down a trail, looking up at the mountains and breathing in that crisp, cool air.

The headlamp was Timo's idea.

Timo got out of the pack and walked the last part of the hike. More accurately, he meandered slowly down the trail, picking up sticks and grass and throwing them off into the grassy areas. Meanwhile we parents were working on being patient and trying to 'soak in the moment' since he clearly was having so much fun...

We love Nonna!

Nonna (Mom G) was here for 6 days in mid-November, when Mattias was 4 weeks old. We really enjoyed relaxing at home together with her (Jim still had 3 days of paternity leave that he could take), and Timo had a BALL playing with Nonna - at one point, I noted that Nonna and Timo had been reading a book together for 30 minutes. Yes, the same book. He loved it. Nonna teaches all of us about what patience and a happy attitude look like!

A little knife skill practice (and banana gobbling)

With Giesers in town, of course we had to hit up a bakery one morning for some treats. Jim, Nonna and Timo went out to Boonzaaijer's Dutch Bakery, a nearby bakery with fantastic goodies of all kinds. They even make bread, but we haven't tried any of those loaves yet.

 Nonna discovered that the best place to race cars in the house is on the kitchen floor (since we have carpet everywhere else).

With Jim at home during the day, Timo got to indulge in one of his favorite activities at the moment: unpacking the toolbox and examining & naming all the tools inside -and then making a big pile of them in the living room.
 

Most of the time it was quite chilly, but with our amazing Colorado sunshine, we still tried to get outside. Here we are heading off for a walk around the neighborhood.

 Saturday was sunny and with weather in the 50s, so we were able to introduce Garden of the Gods to Nonna!

Here's our pre-Thanksgiving feast. We had several veggie dishes plus biscuits and salad. And pumpkin cookies that Nonna and Timo made!

We love Jaja!!

Mom H (Jaja) was here for two weeks after Mattias's birth. Amazingly, she arrived the very day that Mattias was born, even though she had purchased her flights in advance when we were just hoping that Tuesday, Oct 28th would work out for a good arrival. Or maybe I mentioned that already in the last post...but really, isn't that cool?!

Mom of course was a huge help and encouragement during her visit. Most days she kept very busy cooking up a storm in the kitchen, always with 2 or 3 pots on the stove going at the same time and maybe some bread baking in the oven too. I only wish we could have purchased an extra freezer so that we would have had more room for more food!! We quickly ate up all the bread and dahl and now she needs to come back and make more for us! In between all that cooking, she also managed to do all our laundry, play and read with Timo (including an hour every morning when he woke up so I could sleep in longer), do grocery shopping, take a few neighborhood walks, and help out at the two doctor's appointments we had to go to in the first two weeks.

Meanwhile, this is what Mattias and I were up to.

We had great autumn weather almost every day that Mom was here. It really helped us all in our energy levels to be able to play outside or go for short walks. But then the day that Mom left, we woke up to very cold temps and lots of snow! We got 6 inches of snow that day, but fortunately Mom was still able to catch all her flights and not get stuck in Colorado.
