Seen in our pantry, Part II

Fruit! Gotta have this.

Lentils (most often red and brown)

Nuss-fit (nutella), for those late night toast cravings

Curry powder (from our store here and a tin sent from Rachel when in Uganda)

And our favorite mustard!! Makes the BEST mustard salad dressing, with olive oil and balsamic vinegar or lemon juice.

Seen in our pantry, Part I

Inspired by Heather’s recent & clever post on the “interesting” marketing of some common food products here, I decided to pull out and share a few items from our kitchen. So here are 5 things we always have around:

Breakfast foods: coffee & rooibos tea

Rusks (these are actually Jim’s homemade buttermilk rusks, though we also like store-bought muesli and condensed milk varieties)

Granola (Jim’s recipe, based on Mom H - thanks for inspiration!)

Milk (yes it’s in the pantry - until opened - and is in a box… and “full cream” is the equivalent of ‘whole milk’, approx. 4% fat. Imagine our surprise the first time we figured that one out.)

...and peanut butter. Yum. Yum.

Jim’s Ma’amoul

You may have noticed I added this item to our “recent eats” a couple of weeks ago. Jim found the recipe in Food and Home (South African magazine) and, inspired by memories of our visit to Lebanon back in ’04, decided to try it. Though it required a few unusual ingredients (like rosewater), these little date-nut stuffed pastries turned out very well and received positive comments from the friends that we shared them with. Nice job, Jim, and keep it up. I’ll eat them anytime!

Jul and the Griffin Girls – miss you already!

Two weeks ago the Griffins moved back to the US after their 1½ year stint with YWAM here in South Africa. Now on to Montana and your new home there! Those Griffin girls are fun and crazy … I miss you already!
